The Society was established in 1981 as the Japanese Society for Plant Tissue Culture, and was renamed the Japanese Society for Plant Cell and Molecular Biology in 1995, and then the Japanese Society for Plant Biotechnology in 2020 to reflect its extended activities and academic development. Our society supports the development of both basic and applied researches in the fields of plant tissue culture, molecular biology and cell engineering. To this end, we hope to facilitate exchanges of research information and cooperation among researchers in various fields such as basic science, agriculture, pharmacy, and engineering.
Each year, we hold an annual meeting for our members and an open forum for the public to understand plant science and plant biotechnology. In addition, we publish the journal "Plant Biotechnology" four times a year. The website (domestic only) also provides useful and up-to-date information on plant biotechnology.
